The three-day event, which took place at Chicago’s Wintrust Arena, gave Grill, Bates and others an opportunity to showcase their talents in front of NBA and NBA G League scouts, coaches and executives.
Grill turned heads by leading all camp participants with a 38-inch vertical and 2.70-second shuttle run.
Saturday, the former Tigers teammates squared off as opponents in Game 1.
Bates saw 22-plus minutes of action for Team Two in a 89-85 loss to Team 1. His 19 points on eight-of-13 shooting, however, led all scorers. Bates also added three rebounds, three assists and a steal. Grill got the start for Team 1 and was three-of-six from beyond the arc for nine points. He also added four rebounds and an assist.
Sunday, in Game 3, Grill led Team Two with 19 points in a 101-98 loss to Team Three. He was six-of-eight from the field, and added three rebounds, two assists and a game-high three steals.
In the final game of the weekend, Bates dropped nine points – all of which came in the first half – as Team One defeated Team Four 92-73.
As a result of his strong play, Bates was one of five players to earn a spot at this week’s NBA Draft Combine, May 11-18, where he’ll get a chance to further showcase his skills in front of NBA scouts.
Both ESPN2 and NBA TV will be broadcasting the combine throughout the week.
