The party is still coming together. Over the last few years, a handful of Dungeons & Dragons series have been enthusiastically announced, only to fade into the ether: In 2023 Paramount ordered a live-action series from Red Notice director Rawson Marshall Thurber that never came to pass, and more recently, there was news of a Dungeons & Dragons-dedicated channel. That second one may or may not still be a thing; the first almost certainly isn’t, because Netflix has a new plan for a D&D series, and it has a not-entirely-new team.
Deadline reports that showrunner and writer Drew Crevello—who was previously attached to the Paramount series—is set to serve as showrunner and writer for a series called (at least for now) The Forgotten Realms. Deadline writes, “As the title suggests, the proposed series will take place in the iconic campaign setting and centerpiece of the Dungeons & Dragons universe.” Crevello will also executive produce; in that function he’s joined by Shawn Levy, who is a producer and director in Netflix’s massive Stranger Things universe. Hasbro, which owns D&D publisher Wizards of the Coast, is also behind the series.
And that, for now, is pretty much all there is to know. Crevello previously co-created, wrote, and produced the series WeCrashed, and was a co-producer on The Grudge 2. Variety notes that he may have slightly more geek credentials than his IMDb listing suggests, saying, “He also helped to develop films like X-Men: First Class and Deadpool during his time as a film executive.”
Deadline does mention, sadly, that the new series is not related to the one previously in development or to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (pictured above).
