Arsenal vs Manchester United LIVE: FA Cup latest score and updates as Fernandes strikes but Dalot sent off

Arsenal host Manchester United in the third round of the FA Cup as both sides look to make much-needed progress in the cup competition.

Mikel Arteta’s men will be out to bounce back from the disappointment of their 2-0 loss to Newcastle in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, with growing unrest among some sections of the support after that result and some recent tepid attacking displays.

Meanwhile, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is looking to build on a good result in their 2-2 draw to Liverpool last weekend. The visitors are in a buoyant mood after that display, but the nature of their recent form means that they head into the match as underdogs, with the holders look to avoid going out of the competition at the first hurdle.

That’s the strategy! A crossfield ball from Harry Maguire is headed on by Diogo Dalot, with Alejandro Garnacho capitalising on a slip from Gabriel to scamper away down the right. He picks the right pass square to Bruno Fernandes after bearing down on the Arsenal box, and the Manchester United captain curls quite deliciously into the top corner with real panache and power.

Alas, Hojlund fails to find his footing and is forced backwards, with the ball eventually played all the way back to Altay Bayindir. The goalkeeper lumps long over the head of Hojlund. As you were.

Jorginho rather cheaply gives the ball away to Bruno Fernandes, though hurries the visiting captain to force an errant forward pass.

A half of Arsenal dominance but relatively few clearcut chances, Gabriel Martinelli’s offside would-be opener aside. Manchester United have been stodgily built, hoping to take their opportunities on the counter attack – and they’ll be pleased to be right amongst things at 0-0 having barely ventured out of their defensive shell.

Of concern for Mikel Arteta will be that issue for Martin Odegaard having already lost Gabriel Jesus. Arsenal can ill afford to have their captain sidelined for a second time this season.

No foul is given, and Fernandes is properly fuming. Off comes his loosened boot, which is hurled in the direction of the referee, and the Portuguese isn’t done there, picking it up and heaving it down into the turf again to emphasise his point. Andy Madley isn’t convinced; Fernandes is shown a yellow card.
