Arsenal host Manchester United in the third round of the FA Cup as both sides look to make much-needed progress in the cup competition.
Mikel Arteta’s men will be out to bounce back from the disappointment of their 2-0 loss to Newcastle in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, with growing unrest among some sections of the support after that result and some recent tepid attacking displays.
Meanwhile, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is looking to build on a good result in their 2-2 draw to Liverpool last weekend. The visitors are in a buoyant mood after that display, but the nature of their recent form means that they head into the match as underdogs, with the holders look to avoid going out of the competition at the first hurdle.

OFFSIDE! Gabriel Martinelli’s opener is ruled out (Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 19 minutes)
Arsenal FC 0 – 1 Manchester United FC
RED CARD! Diogo Dalot is sent off! Arsenal 0-1 Manchester United, 62 minutes
16:24 , Harry Latham-Coyle
But Diogo Dalot is now in real strife! He’s off! A foolish sliding tackle, a tumbling Mikel Merino and a second yellow for the wing-back!
Manchester United are down to ten. It was a clear booking for Dalot.
Arsenal 0-1 Manchester United, 60 minutes
16:23 , Harry Latham-Coyle
The big French defender is thus absent for the corner, which comes to nothing thanks to a picture perfect rugby tackle from Diogo Dalot on Gabriel, sadly not legal in football. Cheek to cheek from the Portuguese – Os Lobos, give him a call.
Arsenal 0-1 Manchester United, 59 minutes
16:21 , Harry Latham-Coyle
A loose moment from Manuel Ugarte, giving the ball away really sloppily in his own half. Martin Odegaard’s shot is blocked after a bad pass from Raheem Sterling.
Manchester United break with speed as Arsenal scream for a foul from Rasmus Hojlund on William Saliba. There’s no whistle so onwards the visitors go, earning a corner.
Saliba heads to the touchline to get some blood on his face attended to, which won’t please Arsenal fans.
Arsenal 0-1 Manchester United, 57 minutes
16:19 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Bruno Fernandes hasn’t had it all his own way today, but he’s really been up for the fight in this resolute Manchester United performance. That goal really was a thing of beauty.
Arsenal 0-1 Manchester United, 54 minutes
16:17 , Harry Latham-Coyle
What a chance for Kai Havertz to equalise! The ball falls at the feet of the German inside the Manchester United box, but his left-footed swing skews wide of goal and a disbelieving Altay Bayindir, who really should have been picking that out of the back of his net.
GOAL! Arsenal 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED (Bruno Fernandes, 52 minutes)
16:13 , Harry Latham-Coyle
A scintillating strike on the counter-attack! A sublime sucker-punch from Manchester United!
That’s the strategy! A crossfield ball from Harry Maguire is headed on by Diogo Dalot, with Alejandro Garnacho capitalising on a slip from Gabriel to scamper away down the right. He picks the right pass square to Bruno Fernandes after bearing down on the Arsenal box, and the Manchester United captain curls quite deliciously into the top corner with real panache and power.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 50 minutes
16:12 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Gabriel Martinelli will put it in…and Harry Maguire will head it away. The England centre half has been very secure aerially so far.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 49 minutes
16:11 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Diogo Dalot is booked for a lunge on Myles Lewis-Skelly, who had moved nicely beyond the Portuguese as he attempted to get on to a slide-rule pass. Another chance for the burlier blokes to load the Manchester United box.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 48 minutes
16:10 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Rasmus Hojlund has barely had a touch in anger in this game, though gets a chance here as Gabriel is beaten to the ball by Alejandro Garnacho. Alas, Hojlund fails to find his footing and is forced backwards, with the ball eventually played all the way back to Altay Bayindir. The goalkeeper lumps long over the head of Hojlund. As you were.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 47 minutes
16:08 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Raheem Sterling, on for Gabriel Jesus earlier, is really using the width on the right-hand side of the front three in these openikng skirmishes, chalk on his heels as he provides an option. Jorginho rather cheaply gives the ball away to Bruno Fernandes, though hurries the visiting captain to force an errant forward pass.
Second half…
16:07 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Well, the good news is that Martin Odegaard is back out there for the resumption, and moving much more freely than he was at the end of the first half. Pleasing for Mikel Arteta as Arsenal look to break down this tightly-packed Manchester United defensive unit.
No changes at half time. Back underway.
HT: Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United
15:53 , Harry Latham-Coyle
A half of Arsenal dominance but relatively few clearcut chances, Gabriel Martinelli’s offside would-be opener aside. Manchester United have been stodgily built, hoping to take their opportunities on the counter attack – and they’ll be pleased to be right amongst things at 0-0 having barely ventured out of their defensive shell.
Of concern for Mikel Arteta will be that issue for Martin Odegaard having already lost Gabriel Jesus. Arsenal can ill afford to have their captain sidelined for a second time this season.
HALF TIME: Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United
15:51 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 45 + 4 minutes
15:50 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Arsenal can’t catch a break. Martin Odegaard came away limping after striking that free kick and flops to the floor on the halfway line, feeling at an injured leg. He’s going to try and solider on until the interval, but that doesn’t look particularly good.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 45 + 3 minutes
15:48 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Odegaard dusts himseolf down and curls one comfortably over Altay Bayindir’s crossbar.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 45 + 2 minutes
15:46 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Martin Odegaard is felled by Lisandro Martinez, tackling aggressively for a man already in the referee’s book. A free kick in a dangerous area but no second yellow for now.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 45 minutes
15:45 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Huge cheers from the travelling Manchester United fans as Matthijs de Ligt faces up to an onrushing Gabriel Martinelli and wins decisively, first a foot in as the Brazilian tries a shimmy before a firm sliding clearance ends the danger. They’ve been pretty good defensively, so far – though do have five more minutes of additional time to negotiate before the first half job is done.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 43 minutes
15:44 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Before the corner can be taken, the referee has a chat with the gaggle of Arsenal players surrounding the goalkeeper.
They spread like pigeons in the park out of the path of Altay Bayindir he claims above his head.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 42 minutes
15:42 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Arsenal draw a corner out of Matthijs de Ligt, hustling across with good timing to prevent a more dangerous adventure down the left.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 39 minutes
15:41 , Harry Latham-Coyle
This is really bad news for Arsenal, though. After that earlier knee complaint, Jesus was injured in that tangle, and out comes the stretcher to help him off. Oh dear – Arsenal are just having no luck on the right side of their front three.
Raheem Sterling is, at least, fit again, and replaces the inconsolable Jesus, who covers his face with his shirt as he is helped down the tunnel. That’s horrible for him after finding a bit of form over the last month or so.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 37 minutes
15:39 , Harry Latham-Coyle
A clever turn from Noussair Mazraoui takes him beyond a couple of Arsenal players, aided by a coming together between Alejandro Garnacho and Myles Lewis-Skelly. Mazraoui cuts back to Bruno Fernandes, who appears to be bundled in the back by Gabriel Jesus.
No foul is given, and Fernandes is properly fuming. Off comes his loosened boot, which is hurled in the direction of the referee, and the Portuguese isn’t done there, picking it up and heaving it down into the turf again to emphasise his point. Andy Madley isn’t convinced; Fernandes is shown a yellow card.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 35 minutes
15:36 , Harry Latham-Coyle
A rare forward foray from Manchester United ends with a drive for goal from an acute angle. David Raya palms it down comfortably.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 34 minutes
15:34 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Harry Maguire rises high to deny any of Gabriel Martinelli’s teammates a chance to challenge for a cross into the box. It’s not been pretty from Ruben Amorim’s side, but so far it’s been effective.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 32 minutes
15:32 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Altay Bayindir makes a bold, probably incorrect decision to come, flapping at it – but the peep of the referee’s whistle bails the second-choice goalkeeper out.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 31 minutes
15:31 , Harry Latham-Coyle
The Arsenal physio tests out the flexion in that sore Jesus limb, with no major harm done, it seems. Martin Odegaard will deliver.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 29 minutes
15:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle
A first booking of the afternoon somewhat unsurprisingly is shown in the direction of Lisandro Martinez, Gabriel Jesus tumbling after the pair collide. An elbow to the face appears to have prompted the sanction from referee Andy Madley, though the Brazilian is clutching at a sore knee, too. One would hope that it is not an alternative ailment that ends up being serious.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 24 minutes
15:27 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Arsenal push the visitors back again, though, and Noussair Mazraoui is forced into an excellent defensive header. Corner kick.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 24 minutes
15:24 , Harry Latham-Coyle
A first go at goal from a Manchester United player, and it’s the boot of Kobbie Mainoo chancing one from range. A low skudder rather trickles into the hands of a diving David Raya, but having survived 24 minutes almost entirely without the ball, that counts as a moment of optimism for the visitors.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 21 minutes
15:22 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Newcastle have levelled against Bromley. It was fun while it lasted – Lewis Miley’s got that equaliser.
Arsenal still have a pep in their step here as they press for a legitimate opener. Havertz, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Jesus attempt to combine but the penultimate pass in a sweeping move is awry.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 19 minutes
15:19 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Offside! Gabriel Martinelli is furious, believing that the pass to him was played by a defender before he collected, but his goal is chalked off!
Martinelli was clearly in an offside position as Gabriel Jesus’s through ball was struck, and it was most certainly directed towards him. Harry Maguire’s intervening leg is deemed not enough to render a new movement – and despite the German’s protestations, there’s no VAR for Manchester United to fret about. No goal!
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 17 minutes
15:17 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Arsenal do remain without a truly genuine glimpse of goal, though, suggesting Manchester United’s ramparts are doing their job as siege is laid.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 16 minutes
15:15 , Harry Latham-Coyle
It’s becoming a little bit like a training drill, Arsenal’s attack keeping the visiting defence penned in their own area. Harry Maguire stands firm and clears a dangerous delivery from the edge of the six-yard box.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 14 minutes
15:14 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Manchester United are struggling to exert the same influence on the game as they did against Liverpool in the Premier League, their challenges increasingly scrappy. Arsenal warming to their work well.
Meanwhile, Bromley – remarkably – lead at Newcastle – here’s the story of an FA Cup tie years in the making by Lawrence Ostlere:
How Bromley earned ‘game of a lifetime’ at Newcastle in FA Cup third round
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 12 minutes
15:12 , Harry Latham-Coyle
A hand of apology raised by Alejandro Garnacho after a mistimed slide over the damp Emirates sturface. Not a challenge you’d have wanted to put in on the local rec this morning, where the pitch care and heating isn’t quite so expensive.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 10 minutes
15:11 , Harry Latham-Coyle
A wretched routine from the set piece specialists. Martin Odegaard plays it short, the resultant diagonal is misdirected, and the player contesting for it is offside. Woeful.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 9 minutes
15:09 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Myles Lewis-Skelly is looking increasingly like a player who will very soon be Arsenal’s first-choice left back. Though Riccardo Calafiori is out today with a minor muscular issue, Lewis-Skelly has been playing plenty of minutes lately – and helps his side earn a free kick about 35 yards from goal near the touchline.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 7 minutes
15:07 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Arsenal, of course, are in that clean full white strip this afternoon, supporting a very good cause:

Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 5 minutes
15:05 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Gabriel Jesus pops a couple of passes to Martin Odegaard before peeling in behind. There’s slightly too much on the pass to the Brazilian, who hooks meekly into the grasp of Altay Bayindir in the Manchester United goal.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 3 minutes
15:03 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Manchester United have Diogo Dalot over on that side, with the Portuguese and right-sided counterpart Noussair Mazroui beginning to refine their roles on the edges of Ruben Amorim’s back five.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 2 minutes
15:02 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Gabriel Jesus has begun over on the right of Arsenal’s front three. Mikel Arteta has been assessing his options in that position as he looks to cover for the absence of Bukayo Saka, with Ethan Nwaneri’s injury a real shame. Let’s see how Jesus goes this afternoon.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United, 1 minute
15:01 , Harry Latham-Coyle
A pretty ropey start to the game. Manchester United immediately lump long and straight out of play, affording David Raya a goal kick…which the Spaniard launches to no-one in particular. Let’s hope the remaining 89 minutes are rather better.
KICK OFF!
15:00 , Harry Latham-Coyle
And we are underway at the Emirates.
Arsenal vs Manchester United

It’s another chilly one in north London, though ever so slightly warmer than yesterday, where the mercury barely rose into the positive numbers. A day for a couple of early sprints to get yourself going.

Good morning
10:00 , Jamie Braidwood
Arsenal host Manchester United at the Emirates today in the pick of the ties from the third round of the FA Cup.
Mikel Arteta’s side are looking to bounce back from the disappointment of a 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final in midweek, and they are offered the perfect chance to do so at home to an old rival in their first FA Cup match of the season.
United are in buoyant mood after an impressive display in their draw away at Liverpool last weekend, but it remains to be seen if they can carry that bit of momentum and avoid going out of the competition at the first hurdle.
United famously beat both Liverpool and Manchester City on the way to lifting the trophy last season, but they could become one of the first holders this century to go out in the third round if they lose in the capital.
