The Marvel series Daredevil: Born Again is achingly close to premiering on Disney+, and the show we’ll be getting is markedly different than the one that Marvel Studios initially intended to make.
In a recent profile in GQ, Matt Murdoch himself, Charlie Cox and Kingpin actor Charles D’Onofrio shared how the show transformed into one that was more in line with the previous Netflix series and included more of the original cast, including Deborah Ann Woll, who plays Karen Page, and Elden Henson, who once again takes on the role of Foggy Nelson.
“Vincent and I were both not 100 percent convinced what we were doing at the time was the right path,” Cox told GQ about the original version of the Disney+ series, “but we’re both good soldiers and professionals, and we were trying to be open-minded.”
After six episodes had been shot, the production had to take a forced pause because of the writers’ and actors’ strikes. The hiatus allowed Marvel to reassess where the show was going. “In a bizarre twist of fate, the strikes that were so terrible for so many people in the industry ended up being the best thing that happened for our particular show,” Cox said.
D’Onofrio was more upfront about Marvel’s reassessment during the pause: “We made it known that we were not happy, and the big bosses, especially Kevin [Feige], listened to us,” he said.
Previous showrunners Chris Ord and Matt Corman were let go and The Punisher showrunner Dario Scardapane was brought in. The Netflix stunt coordinator Phil Silvera was also brought on, and Karen and Foggy were brought back as well.
According to Cox, Scardapane added three additional episodes and reworked what was already shot by stitching them together via newly written scenes. Based on what we’ve seen of the show so far, it’s clear that the series is more in line with the violent, gritty tone of the Netflix series.
We’ll be able to see full episodes and judge for ourselves how the new series works soon! The first two episodes of Daredevil: Born Again premiere on Disney+ on March 4, 2025, at 6 p.m. PT/9 p.m. ET. The third episode premieres on March 11, and the fourth on March 18. To keep things confusing, however, March 25 will be the premiere date for both episode five and episode six. No news yet on when the last three episodes in the first season will premiere.
