Olympics 2024 LIVE: Anna Henderson claims brilliant cycling silver in the rain after Team GB win diving bronze

The Olympics delivers a first full day of action at Paris 2024 on Saturday after a memorable opening ceremony.

Team GB earned its first medal of the Games after Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen claimed diving bronze in dramatic circumstances, winning Britain’s first medal in the women’s diving in 64 years. That was followed by a superb road cycling silver from Anna Henderson in the women’s individual time trial amid treacherous rain in Paris, with Josh Tarling one of the favourites in the men’s event to follow.

The swimming takes centre stage this evening with Team GB’s focus is on Adam Peaty as he bids to win three consecutive 100m breaststroke Olympic gold medals. But the race of the day, and perhaps the meet, puts Katie Ledecky, Ariarne Titmus and Summer McIntosh against each other in the women’s 400m freestyle.

Also look out for Rafael Nadal, fresh from starring in Friday night’s opening ceremony, with the Spaniard partnering Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s doubles as tennis begins at Roland Garros.

Follow all the action, latest results and medals from Paris 2024 in our live blog below:

Olympics 2024: Women’s time trial – ANNA HENDERSON WINS SILVER FOR TEAM GB!

15:01 , Sonia Twigg

Henderson has been guaranteed a medal, will it be bronze or silver?

Chloe Dygert is the only rider still out on the course and she has had a fall, she is a minute and a half down on the leader Brown at the last section time.

Dygert finishes in third and Henderson has claimed silver! What a moment for the British rider, and disappointment for the American, whose race was so clearly affected by her fall which caused her to lose her glasses.

Henderson does not last long!

Grace Brown has ridden the ride of her life and claims the top spot by over a minute and a half!

That is likely to be a winning time, she goes under 40 minutes with a time of 39:38:24.

It’s a minute and a half faster than Henderson and what a ride!

Olympics 2024: Women’s time trial

Anna Henderson finishes with an impressive time and goes top!

That has been a good ride from the Olympic debutant, 41:09:83 is the time!

But there are three riders behind her!

Olympics 2024: Rugby sevens

14:52 , Jack Rathborn at the Stade de France

Dupont magic! There it is, touch and reverse to release Rabbadj again, this game is broken wide open.

The Boks have crumbled, Dupont lighting the fuse, even if Rabbadj provided the finishing touches for the hosts.

And there’s Jordan Sepho, the superman finish after storming around the back, 19-5 and France are in the final!

Olympics 2024: Rugby sevens

TRY FRANCE! Rayan Rabbadj!

Varian Pasquet did the damage, scampering clear after slashing at the Boks’ defence, remarkable. He held up his run and offloaded to Rayan for the score.

The conversion is good from Rabbadj, 7-5 and suddenly the Stade de France flips from nerves to joy, the pride radiating around this theatre of sport.

Anna Henderson goes top at 22km as well in the women’s time trial.

There are three riders behind her who have their times yet to be recorded, but it’s an impressive 27:59.

She has 11 and a half seconds on the riders in front of her at that point, but it’s the ones behind her who are the most threatening.

There’s another fall though! Chloe Dygert has fallen off her bike! She’s the second American to fall, it was the change of surface onto the cobbles, which will be incredibly slippery.

She banged her head, lost her glasses and it might have cost her 10 seconds.

Olympics 2024: Rugby sevens

Tristan Leyds with a chuckle there, he can enjoy the intense nature of this game and the expectation of the home crowd with the Boks in range.

There’s a nervy edge to the crowd as Andy Timo helps a sturdy French backline holds firm.

It’s level at the break. An aggressive and frenetic game packed with tackles. So much on the line! Les Bleus could become the first host nation to win this event.

And there it is, the change the crowd wanted: Dupont on for Parez Edo Martin, who had looked nervy in that first half.

TRY LEYDS! SOUTH AFRICA LEAD! Silence in the Stade de France, he slips away from Paulin Riva, and buries the score in the corner. 5-0.

Anna Henderson is coming up to her first section time, she does it in 16:23, which is good! It puts her top with just three riders to go.

The times at the end are tumbling, and New Zealand’s Cadzow has just one top with a time of 41:46:02

Aaron Grandidier Nkanang tumbles forward, the crowd adore the sheer violence of that move.

Rosko Specman gathers after a messy move by France led by Stephen Parez Edo Martin.

This is already French attack against South African defence. Selvyn Davids looking to get the Boks going. But it’s a nervy move, with the passing lacking accuracy. This cauldron is posing an issue for South Africa, France piling on the pressure. Still 0-0 after five minutes.

Another fall! Belgian rider Kopecky, the world road race champion has crashed and come off her bike!

That will not have helped her time and she had been the quickest in the first sector.

Excitement has turned to unrest, this French crowd has built itself up into a feverish mood awaiting France and South Africa, the big semi-final is NEXT!

Allez Les Bleus rings around the stadium, then a hushed silence. Murmurings around the Stade de France as the Springboks are announced.

Now the French team announced, a deafening noise as the surname of each French player is bellowed back out. France is ready, here we go!

Knibb is over the line, she goes into second place, and it might just be a case of what could have been.

The 38-year-old Baker still has it, bursting through Ireland and dancing around the posts for the score. The Eagles lead 14-7.

Baker now has six tries at the Games, a remarkable impact at his age.

The upset is on and Ireland have just two minutes remaining to salvage this situation.

But Ward capitalises on smart line-out play from the Irish, backtracking at the last minute and he gets over, but the conversion isn’t there.

Now then, the crowd sense something a bit special, Terry Kennedy in space, looking to offload, but he’ll go alone falling down and snatching victory for the Irish, 17-14.

Matthew Ebden will be glad this match was only a best of three sets rather than five. The Australian was totally outclassed by Djokovic, winning in straight sets and dispatching his opponent expeditiously, the whole match lasting just 53 minutes.

A sizeable crowd inside the Court Philippe-Chatrier rallied around the underdog, powering their unlikely hero to a game win which will have meant far more to the Australian than any of Djokovic’s twelve.

The match may as well have been a training session for the Serb, who navigated coolly through the afternoon, producing four aces and just ten unforced errors.

The win sets up one half of the equation for a round two match against his long-time rival Rafael Nadal, another clay court legend.

“I am really glad that this match went the way it did, but I am sorry for Matthew. He told me at the net that it was his first singles match in two years,” Djokovic said following the match. “For me it is a great win and it is fantastic to see a full house from day one at this tournament.”

“There is a great hype around [the potential round two match against Nadal]. That one can be a blockbuster, it is one of the events that a lot of poeple at the Olympics are looking forward to. I am ready for it and looking forward to our last dance, so to say, on this court.”

The British rider Anna Henderson has just started.

She has had to come back from two broken collarbones this season, but now her race is underway, and she will want to be careful to avoid the falls that other riders have suffered.

We also have our first time as well, just over 45 minutes from a Slovenian rider who was the first on the track.

And a new fastest time from the only Afghanistan rider Farida Hashimi of 44:29:13.

Ireland really pushing to break this game open after snatching an early 7-0 lead.

But there’s a glimpse of the USA biting back, with the crowd left gutted after Perry Baker mistimes his run with the Irish line broken.

But Cummings does break through, that’s serious speed, the hurdle demonstrates his athleticism too and this one is all square after a tidy conversion. The crowd really into this one now. 7-7 at the break.

Taylor Knibb has a third fall! These roads must be so slippery.

She now has a puncture, the mechanic running over with the new bike has gone flying, this could not be more chaotic for the American rider.

The reporter towards the finish line has just been pointing out a number of white lines ahead of a turn that will be affecting their grip.

Knibb has just been shown with a nasty cut around her knee, that will not be good ahead of her triathlon in just a few days’ time.

TRY! Andrew Knewstubb with the decisive score and the All Blacks emerge victorious.

Crushing for Argentina, who had battled back so well.

But some smart interplay and the perfect dummy from Knewstubb was enough to break the Pumas in extra-time. Next up… USA v Ireland!

And we have just seen a first glimpse of just how difficult this course is in the wet conditions, Danish rider Ludwig has just come off her bike trying to go round a corner.

It slid from underneath her around a roundabout and she had to pick herself up and get back on. She did so immediately so seems to be okay, but that might just shake her a bit going forwards!

And Knibb, the American rider and triathlete and one of the favourites has also just come off at exactly the same point!

Knibb falls again almost immediately! A second fall for the American, she had a lead of over 30 seconds at the first check, but that will have cost her.

Moses Leo bundles over for New Zealand with just a few seconds remaining, Argentina denied at the death again.

But a missed conversion ensures extra-time, five minutes… First score wins, this is tense and the crowd love it!

It’s nip and tuck here, a few knock-ons and the game has become messy. The crowd urging every player to conjure up something audacious, every flick of the wrists to launch the ball out wide is greeted with a roar.

Novak Djokovic is making light work of Matthew Ebden, winning the first set without dropping a game and dropping an astounding eight points.

Simply, the gulf in class between the players seems to be too wide for the Australian, who has struggled to compete with his opponents composure and consistency.

The world number two has barely broken a sweat thus far, and the second set is now underway.

On the neighbouring court, Carlos Alcaraz has also taken a one set lead over Lebanon’s Hady Habib, with the first set ending on a score of 6-3.

We’re underway at the Stade de France and it’s a cracking atmosphere. It’s dried out, too, and the fans are in a boisterous mood for New Zealand v Argentina.

An hour until the hosts take on South Africa in that crunch semi-final. It promises to be a thrilling afternoon of sevens.

And the crowd is thrilled at this start from the All Blacks, Akuila Rokolisoa rips the ball away from a couple of Pumas before wriggling free and scurrying back under the posts, TRY! New Zealand lead 7-0.

But Argentina hit back in a hurry, Tobias Wade finishing close to the posts and we’re all square at the break.

On the Court Philippe-Chatrier, Australia’s Matthew Ebden, who primarily plays doubles and has a career high singles ranking of 39, has the unenviable task of playing against Novak Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam winner.

Elsewhere, recent Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz is facing Lebanon’s Hady Habib, the Spaniard currently leading by three games to nil.

Australian boxer hits out at ‘sad’ French rules over hijab at Paris Olympics

13:06 , Sonia Twigg

Australian boxer Tina Rahimi has criticised France’s “sad” rules on secularism and athletes wearing the hijab at the Paris Olympics.

Muslim French sprinter Sounkamba Sylla stated that wearing a hijab would prevent her from appearing in Friday’s Opening Ceremony.

While the French Olympic Committee said Sylla accepted the option of wearing a cap instead. The host nation, home to Europe’s largest Muslim minority, enforces laws to protect the principle of secularism under which state employees and school pupils are banned from wearing religious symbols and clothing in public institutions.

Game, set, match, Swiatek! The Pole breaks Begu to take victory in round one, overcoming nervous moments in the second set to progress as Begu gifted the final point to her opponent through a double fault.

The performance was far from Swiatek’s best. Begu, ranked 136th in the world, made her opponent work for the win, demanding 14 forced errors and managing two aces where Swiatek managed none.

Looking to round two, Swiatek will face either Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska or France’s Diane Parry.

Outdoor play remains weather affected, though the next indoor match will see Novak Djokovic take on Australia’s Matthew Ebden.

Adam Peaty ‘didn’t have to prove anything’ in Olympics heats

12:54 , Jamie Braidwood in Paris

Adam Peaty, speaking at the La Defense Arena after making his first appearance of the Olympics in the men’s 100m breaststroke heats, where he qualified for tonight’s semi-finals with ease:

On his his heat:

“The whole field was a bit slow in a sense. I saw the scores come in, and I was like I didn’t really have to push anything too far. I didn’t have to prove anything. Let’s see what we get tonight. We can’t win the battle now, we have to win it tomorrow.”

On the difference between Tokyo and Paris:

“Very different, I was a younger man with a little bit more to prove and a little bit angrier back then, but obviously, tonight we got a shift to do, and I feel that we have to be on our A game to make sure we are into that final.”

On controversy leading up to the Games:

“It is always in the back of your mind as an athlete. You definitely want a fair game and to win fair and be around people who do that and live by the same values and that’s all I will say on that. I think everyone knows what we are talking about, but at the same time, we have a job to do, and we can’t let that be a cloud on the road. “

Swiatek holds her serve, winning a fourth game, and Begu will now serve for the set.

Olympics 2024: Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen react after winning Team GB first medal

12:37 , Jack Rathborn

“Crazy, crazy,” Scarlett Mew Jensen says after winning bronze in the 3, springboard synchro, which is first diving medal by a British female at any Games since 1960. “I mean, I don’t think I can quite believe it right now. I’m super proud of Yaz, super proud of myself, super proud of the team. We’ve worked insanely hard, and we couldn’t have come away with a better outcome.

“The group of girls we have on this team are unmatched. I’m not worried about any of the girls. I think they will deliver over the next couple of days. I’m super excited for the rest of the team – we started the ball rolling, so let’s keep it going.

“We knew that even if we did a good one, we would still be on the back foot. We knew that Australia needed to mess up, basically. So for that to actually happen, we were very, very shocked, because that’s a very easy dive for them.

“They’re very talented, very experienced. Olympic medallists themselves. So it was very shocking on that last dive. But we knew that we needed to deliver towards the end of it.”

Yasmin Harper has become a bronze medallist alongside her partner Scarlett Mew Jenson and said to the BBC after the event: “We’re so excited, we are so pleased with ourselves. We came into this event knowing this is what we want and we had to stand on the boards and deliver and I’m so proud that we were able to do that this morning.”

She added: “Every time before we do a dive, we have a little word with each other to take our time because we know what we’re doing but on our last dive we decided to change our order and put our hardest dive last just so we have a bit of extra advantage at the end and we put our best one there so it went well for us and we were really pleased.”

Mew Jensen added: I am very much lost for words, a month ago I didn’t think I would be here. To be up on the boards and to come away with that [bronze medal] I can’t imagine anything better.”

Time for a bit of a catch up, and it’s a great start and race from the Women’s double sculls.

After that they pulled well over a boat’s length ahead. They have dug in and gone hard, but kept their rhythm.

Gareth Furlong is content after Team GB’s winning start in the men’s hockey.

“Everyone has been ready to get going and it’s a perfect start for us,” Furlong says. “Prep has been really good, we had a productive couple of training games and we’ve just been building for this first game.

“It’s part of my job in the team and it’s nice to have the homework pay off. To come out first game and start with three points is the most important thing. I’m really happy.”

While Nick Park added: “I wish I could say I do that all the time but I most certainly don’t. It was a slightly peculiar place to find myself in, going through on goal, but I was over the moon to finish it off for the team.

“I’ve grown up watching the Olympics, I remember ’08, ’12, ’16. It’s fantastic to be here now and live it.

“As I walked into the village, I was getting flashbacks to London 2012 when I was watching with my sister. It’s a hell of a journey and I’m so glad to be here.”

Luke Whitehouse on next, he has come off, and his legs came apart. He is the fourth performer and it doesn’t look like pommel is his speciality, unlike Whitlock.

He does manage to pull off a big dismount. Britain have put in three good scores on pommel, and will they still be top?

Team GB earned its first medal of Paris 2024 after Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen claimed diving bronze in dramatic circumstances.

Harper and Mew Jensen scored 70.68 in the final round and the battle for bronze was on with Australian pair Maddison Keeney and Anabelle Smith.

A slip on the diving board in the final round by the Australians saw them post only 48.60, paving the way for Harper and Mew Jensen to place third.

China’s Yani Chang and Yiwen Chen eased to gold with a consistent performance that saw them finish first across the five rounds, while USA pair Sarah Bacon and Kassidy Cook claimed silver.

Harper and Mew Jensen go for a forward 3 and 1/2 somersault for their final dive, with the judges affording the pair a score of 70.68.

That would have been good enough for a silver medal back in Tokyo, but will it be enough for a podium finish today?
