There have been many attempted adaptations of the Red Sonja comics over the years. There is, of course, the 1985 film starring Brigitte Nielsen (pictured above) that made its way to theaters. Over the last 20 or so years, there have been other efforts, including the latest one by Millennium Films, which has been in the works since 2017.
That feature, which has had several recastings and changes in writers is finally, finally finished and ready to go out into the world.
According to Deadline, this version of the film, “follows barbarian huntress Red Sonja, who must unite a group of unlikely warriors to face off against the evil tyrant Emperor Draygan and his deadly bride, Dark Annisia.” Millennium sold distribution rights for the film in the U.K. and Ireland to Signature Entertainment. The company plans to release the movie in those territories later this year.
The film adaptation sees Matilda Lutz (Revenge) starring as the titular Sonja. Other actors on the call sheet include Robert Sheehan (The Umbrella Academy), Wallis Day (Sheroes), Michael Bisping (Den of Thieves), Luca Pasqualino (Snowpiercer), Rhona Mitra (Underworld: Rise of the Lycans), Martyn Ford (Final Score), Ben Radcliffe (Cuban Fury), Eliza Matengu (Predestination), Veronica Ferres (Crisis), Phillip Winchester (Strike Back), and Trevor Eve (Waking the Dead). Its script comes from Tasha Huo (The Witcher: Blood Origin) and is directed by M. J. Bassett, whose previous credits include episodes of Altered Carbon, Reacher, and Quantum Leap.
No news yet on when Red Sonja will make its way to U.S. theaters.
