If the appearance of this trailer feels a little bit, “Wow, finally,” you’re not alone: Marvel announced that Ironheart was “coming soon” all the way back in December of 2020, which was at least a decade ago, right? But here it is, finally!
Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) made her debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, where her inventions drew the attention of a whole lot of folks, not all of them with good intentions. She spent time time in Wakanda—referred to here as her internship abroad—and made a nifty suit of armor for Okoye (Danai Gurira). And then, it seems, she went back to Chicago, where somebody sets up an elaborate (and annoying) test for her in an elevator. Which she tackles the way she wants to, not the way she’s being told.
This trailer, as is so often the case, feels like it tells the whole plot of the six-episode series: Riri makes the acquaintance of a fellow who’s in favor of doing questionable things in the pursuit of greatness (Anthony Ramos as the Hood); her friends and family suggest this is not a great idea; she then also makes the acquaintance of a fellow with some self-guided weapons under a very out-of-place-sign (Alden Ehrenreich). Things go sideways and she needs to suit up in her own brilliant power armor.
But, as always, there may be more to the story. And it’s impossible not to root for Riri. Ironheart also stars Lyric Ross, Matthew Elam, Anji White, Manny Montana as Cousin John, Shea Couleé, and Craig Pelton.
The character of Riri Williams was created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Mike Deodato; the Disney+ series is created by Chinaka Hodge (Snowpiercer), executive produced by Ryan Coogler, and directed (three episodes each) by Sam Bailey and Angela Barnes.
Ironheart takes off June 24th on Disney+.
